The World According to Karl Lagerfeld

Anyone who loves Chanel or fashion, or both will agree that the name Karl Lagerfeld is not a foreign language. After collaborating on different sides of fashion, this Chanel helmer truly established himself in the industry.

Karl Lagerfeld on WWD CEO Summit
The problem with famous people like him in the fashion business is that they are mostly frank, and sometimes brutally frank, that anyone who is not settled on her identity and personal style will have inner-directed confusion. But you can honestly get tons of what there is to learn about fashion from them.

With fame attaches controversies. And Karl has not been an exemption. First, the annoyance he's given to Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour in the Milan Fashion Week, to his seemingly indiscreet  statement about Heidi Klum, to his outright comments about Adele's mortal parts, to losing a horrible number of pounds in his weight, to his Siamese cat named Choupette. All these are to be perpetuated and spiced up in a book about a compilation of his most outrageous quotes. It is set for release by 25th of September this year, but available to pre- order now in Amazon.

The World According to Karl Book Cover
The book titled, The World According to Karl or Le Monde Selon Karl, in French will be published by Thames & Hudson in the UK with 50 accompanying illustrations by Charles Ameline. It's a handiwork of Patrick Mauries, Jean-Christophe Napias, and Sandrine Gulbenkian- a privilege which Karl receives for being reputable.

No topic seems to deserve a filter for him- something which undoubtedly will make the book an entertaining piece to read. Something which I don't see as redundancy or plain brandish of his vehemence, but more like a legacy. After all, his trademark white hair and black glasses look and his undeniably faddish collections make his name one of the most interesting people to publish about.

Here are few selections of his sharp-edged-but-somehow-true tongue as published on Vogue:

On unattractive and short people

http://www.vogue.co.uk/spy/celebrity-photos/2009/02/09/karl-lagerfeld-famous-quotes/gallery/372829

Life is not a beauty contest, some [ugly people] are great. What I hate is nasty, ugly people. The worst is ugly short men. Women can be short, but for men it is impossible. It is something that they will not forgive in life- they are mean and they want to kill you.

On his collaboration with H&M and relying less on cost and more on the individual's sense of style

http://www.vogue.co.uk/spy/celebrity-photos/2009/02/09/karl-lagerfeld-famous-quotes/gallery/393366

Chic is a kind of mayonnaise, either it tastes, or it doesn't.

On staying healthy

http://www.vogue.co.uk/spy/celebrity-photos/2009/02/09/karl-lagerfeld-famous-quotes/gallery/350148

Vanity is the healthiest thing in life.

On interview etiquette

http://www.vogue.co.uk/spy/celebrity-photos/2009/02/09/karl-lagerfeld-famous-quotes/gallery/478592

I had an interview once with a German journalist- some horrible ugly woman. It was in the early days after the communists- maybe a week after- and she wore a yellow sweater that was kind of see through. She had huge tits and a huge black bra, and she said to me: 'It's impolite, remove your glasses.' I said: 'Do I ask you to remove your bra?'

On phones

I send notes. I'm not a chambermaid whom you can  ring at every moment. Today, you know, most people act like they work at a switchboard in a hotel.

On smoking

http://www.vogue.co.uk/spy/celebrity-photos/2009/02/09/karl-lagerfeld-famous-quotes/gallery/478604

When I was 14, I wanted to smoke because my mother smoked like mad. I wanted to smoke to look grown-up. But my mother said: 'You shouldn't smoke. Your hands are not that beautiful and that shows when you smoke.'

On Coco Chanel

http://www.vogue.co.uk/spy/celebrity-photos/2009/02/09/karl-lagerfeld-famous-quotes/gallery/651846

What I do Coco would have hated. The label has an image and it's up to me to update it. I do what she never did. I had to find my mark. I had to grown from what Chanel was to what it should be, could be, what it had been to something else.

On his distaste for tattoos

http://www.vogue.co.uk/spy/celebrity-photos/2009/02/09/karl-lagerfeld-famous-quotes/gallery/866531

I think tattoos are horrible. It's like living in a Pucci dress full-time. If you're young and tight, maybe it's ok, but...

I'm a fool for traditional box jackets so it's obvious that I'm his fan, too.

Custom Trips from the World's Largest Collection of Handmade Travel Ideas

Traveling is such a liberating pursuit. You get to see the places firsthand and the experience, of course, is far better and unique than simply being told by a guidebook.

The trend of travel today reached even more people desiring to get to their dream destinations. But searching for the must-sees and must-dos for a trip, in prints and various websites, is only doing half the job. The challenge comes more from how to put together the searches into one doable travel plan.

Travelers wanting to come up with a feasible travel plan look at an average of 20 different sites between 1-3 months. Surprisingly, some of these sites do not offer you with all the adequate and comprehensive information that you need.

Given a busy work-life schedule, opening and reading these websites and articles into several tabs is quite hectic and impractical. Another question is, while all these information is essentially still available online, all distributed throughout the space, the feeling of an authentic trip is missing.  Think about your favorite traveler and going on the same trip he or she took- adding and subtracting your own needs and priorities. That's when mygola becomes largely useful.

How mygola solves the pain of travel planning

Mygola helps you create completely custom trips on the world's largest collection of beautiful curated itineraries. You can create the first cut of your trip plan in minutes. There is no need to go into different (and otherwise useless) sites because it will do the hard work for you.

Mygola has taken on the challenge to dramatically simplify your travel planning experience by connecting the dots for you. Simply sign up with your email or log in using your facebook or twitter account and you are taken into a simple and meaningful start page.

The first page you see after logging in. Lets you make some quick choices on how to go about exploring the site.
Once in, you can type in the destination you want to create a travel plan for and all relevant information will show up in carefully selected articles from reliable websites, with photo thumbnails to go with them.

You can specify your search according to theme (Party, Shopping, Adventure, Food & Wine, etc), number of days, and particular places, which you can see in the filters at the top. Once you have told mygola your first level preferences and destinations and hit search, you are presented with meaning results- real trips taken by real travelers- all custom to your needs.

The default search result page. You can apply a number of helpful filters on top arrive at the search results.

By clicking at the photo thumbnails of the specific place shown up in the search result, you will find a more specific itinerary.

The overview section of any itinerary. The text block at the bottom is the introduction to the itinerary. There is a navigation list on the right which shows the number of days and the destinations within those days, and the experience within the day.
You can click the destinations from the navigation list in the right to let you decide whether to include that place as one of your interests; if you'd definitely like to visit them or are they more of a maybe. Or skip them altogether.

The most granular view. This shows the individual points of interest and experiences.  Below are meta-date like address,  telephone, websites, foursquare pages, etc. , and the description of the POI. On the right, there are "definitely" and "maybe" buttons you use to add a POI to your list favorites.
The view of the planner. The cards can be dragged to occupy more of the time, can be moved between days and different times of the day. Vacant positions can be filled by recommendations.
Why you should use mygola

While mygola allows you to pick your interests in specific destinations and have it laid out in an organized daily travel plan, the entire browsing is designed beautifully that feels much like a magazine.

It enables you to create a custom plan travel while taking care of distances, business hours, and a number of other constraints to ensure that the final itinerary is very feasible.

The website involved the points of view of real travelers and travel experts around the world to gather all information about things that poses extensive problems, particularly on the travel planning stage, and finally came up with a service to fix these.

It started a travel Q&A 3 years back, which saw much success. In the process, it helped million travelers (including myself) plan their trip to 100+ countries. This experience prompted the mygola team to build this new travel planning service.

Take for example this Day 1 travel plan of my trip to Hong Kong last January which I organized using mygola.

It lets you see where exactly in the map your destination is found, how many kilometer it will take, and by clicking the place- all the pertinent information you need to know.
One reason for using mygola that worked to my advantage was that I only needed to supply the keywords and all necessary information, options and recommendations were given at hand. Now, those keywords are readily provided by simply clicking on the specific theme and filters. Plus there are travel tips written that you would have not read or found in other websites.

All content offered in the service is curated by real persons, a massive community of travel experts throwing high quality content for other travelers.

Mygola is for all do-it-yourself travelers wanting to get an efficient travel plan by providing an intuitive toolkit. It gives you the best searches there are in the travel world and puts in the necessary information so that you get the perfect balance.

Balik Tanaw: Favorite 90's Memories Part 3

Man, was the idea of posting memories from the 90's a total baloney? I guess not.

Needless to say that most people can to relate to it. There are still fun remembrances that others can hardly recall until someone is there to remind it to them. I tell you it's not false modesty if I say posting this is not all about gaining more traffic to my site. It's more about bringing out something relevant to my readers. And given  my druthers, I'd like to hope this post will serve as reference soon when 90's will already become a distant decade in the past.

Let's begin our time travel for the third time.

Where did I stop in Part 2?

Ahh here!

Morning TV Shows

"Bawat bata may tanong, 'ba't ganito, ba't ganon?' Hayaang buksan
ang isipan sa Science o Agham. Tayo na! Sa sineskwela! Tuklasin na-
tin ang siyensya. Buksan ang pag-iisip. Tayo'y likas na sayantis."

Aahh, those lines play a huge part of my childhood. I still watch this every weekday mornings on Knowledge Channel whenever I have the chance to.

Naaalala mo ba yan? Batibot! :D
Eh yung mga kanta ng At Iba Pa??? :D
Remember Porfirio of Epol Apple? Eh si kuya Bodjie who was formerly in Batibot, too? :D
Do you remember this also? Hit play so you'll know :D I'm totally not a math junkie but I knew I'm going to enjoy it someday just by listening to this :D

Ikaw ang unang nag-buo ng bayang pilipino. Ikaw ang
unang lumaban sa pananakop ng dayuhan. Ikaw ang nag-sindi
ng ilaw. Ikaw and nag-bigay ng liwanag sa kahulugan at katwiran,
        sa halaga ng kalayaan!

Bayani! One of my faves! My nationalistic hint is awaken. Kinikilabutan pa rin ako. This honestly influenced my love for learning Philippine History kahit pa ba madalas nakakalula magbasa ng mahahabang narratives. Kayo, anong episode ang naaalala n'yo? :D

I even posted an entry that entirely talks about another sensible TV show, Hiraya Manawari. Click here in case you haven't read it yet.

Hiraya Manawari! Aaahhh childhood! Agree when it was said that not all youth experienced
childhood with these TV series.

Remember Balt and Mithi?? How about listening to that vid below
Could not find any better video for the opening. But I surely miss watching this.
Still aired on Knowledge Channel. You can check on their website to know the time slot.
Mga kwentong mula sa pahina. Mga kwentong panitikan. That's how I describe this TV series. :) :)

Nighttime TV Shows

Familiar lang ang linyang yan for sure! :D

"Magandang gabi bayan!" a la Noli de Castro haha :D
A trusted news program already! Ever since the 90s :)
There was Balitang K long before Rated K! :D
Kung may Kuya Kim ngayon, noon merong Ka Ernie Baron along the famous line,
"Pag walang knowledge, walang power" :)
And of course! Who will ever forget?? Go go go Power Rangers! hahaha :D
Whoa! Si Alpha who is better known by kids as "ayayayay" hahaha :D
Real crimes, real people, real story. Calvento Files! I so remember this!!!
Dramas oh dramas!!! hahaha

How did it feel when Ted Failon already starts to say "Hoy gising!" haha :D
How about the Mexican novelas that invaded Phil TV before Korean novelas did? haha:D

The World Tonight! My favorite late night news program (I was 5 and young but I'm honest if I'd say I really watch this back then) I remember Mr.Teddy Locsin breaking the opening line, "I'm Teddy Locsin,Jr. and this is The World Tonight" I loved that!

Oka Tokat (Takot Ako) Creepy TV series every Tuesday nights in the 90s :)

And one of the most sensible TV shows, Wansapanataym! :) Sometimes it makes me cry when I listen to the opening song again :) :) A very good show to watch, aired every Sunday evening (just before kids go back to school on the weekdays)
Napanood niyo din ba yung movie??? :) Si Barbiel!!!Who made known the line "Oh my gulay!" hahaha

And here's to all the 90s evening filled with laughter...

Balik Tanaw: Favorite 90's Memories Part 2

The afterthought is endless. I was not born an expat so I have a somewhat serious mind for a lot of Filipino  memories in the 90's. Though I could also not afford to overlook the foreign ones. Some of my readers and friends' reactions after posting the Part I made me realize there is just too much I could look back on to.

And so I reckon more retrospection as something positively worth doing.

Ready for another journey down memory lane?

The Music

There was MTV before Myx hehe :D
You're a 90's kid if you can finish the song, "Ice Ice _ _ _ _" Alam mo yaaaannn! hahaha :D

You surely know Spice Girls! And almost all of their songs!

You can pretty memorize Barbie Girl by Aqua haha :D

You know S Club 7!!! :D
Very in ang BOY BANDS!!! N Sync, Backstreet Boys (Backstreet's back, alright! hahaha) , 98 Degrees, A1, Westlife, and guess what band is in the lower left? ------------- Boyzone! Squeals! :D
I almost forgot!!! Boyz II Men whew!!! I'd be cursed! haha
If today's decade has Justin Bieber, before we had Aaron Carter!!!!! I bet you are already  humming "I'm all about you, I'm all about us" in your mind right now noh?! haha

Burberry & the London Fad

If I'm honest, I have to tell you there's a slight disadvantage about living in a third world country. The London 2012 Olympics has been running on and it's bad to know I could not, at least for the time being, travel a hundred miles to see the largest metropolis area of United Kingdom.

London is a fad not only because of the recent 2012 Olympics. It is a destination that is frequented by most travelers and on a separate context, by tourists.

If you're a legit to traveling or a junkie of it, I for sure don't need to tell you a litany of adjectives to describe London. I shall rather show you a tribute to one of the global brands that is distinctly British-- Burberry. This time not for their latest collection but for the flabbergasting photos of London that they regularly post on their website.

Cloudless sky over the Thames, London
Just a slight history: the first established settlement of this city with rich Romano-British origin happened in this Thames River.

Afternoon sunshine over Big Ben, London
If there's one landmark I'd like having my picture taken in aside from the Eiffel Tower and the Singapore Merlion is the Big Ben.

Reflections in puddles outside The National Gallery, London
You definitely won't run out of galleries and theaters to capture in London. The National Gallery is one example.

Sunny spells in Covent Garden, London
Isn't London's telephone station a good travel find?

Broken clouds over St Pancras Station, London
Western structures convince me enough that one important reason to travel is to discover a place through its history. When the desire to travel and chronicle the journeys go to a deeper level, it's not enough to merely know how a place is different from your own country. Your really crave to delve into something more.

Photo: Clear skies this evening in London over Battersea Power Station and Chelsea Bridge 19°C | 66°F
Clear skies this evening in London over Battersea Power Station and Chelsea Bridge
Traveling to London is such a great affair. Sometimes I grapple my negative thoughts of seeing London as impossible and bring out the Charlie Brown in me. I eventually envision myself nestling my toes in a cold Europe road, having a quintessentially English tongue.

Sun breaking through clouds over Hyde Park Corner, London
Most London weather guides say July and August are its warmest months. You can probably pair up shorts, racerback tank tops, and a light colored kimono to bounce off too much heat and include this Burberry Orchard Bag and Field Boots to lightly add finesse to your August London ensemble. The Orchard Bag can pretty carry your essentials if you are roaming London over the weekend.

Everything is just so postcard perfect!
