Why You Should Travel While You're Young

Few weeks ago I was discussing with two of my colleagues about our plan to travel southeast China.

I emailed  travel agencies, twitted and searched on google. While I was presenting my output, another colleague murmured from a distance:

“But…”

But that is quite an expense. There are still several months to come and you might still change your minds”.

“But…”, this word to me sounds lethal. It rubs off more than the enthusiasm. It sounds as if it has a fair way of viewing things when it only magnifies the fear to make out what we intend to achieve.

“It allows us to be cowards, while sounding noble.” said Jeff Goins. True indeed!

I know many people who are vocal about their desire to travel the world but do not actually want to pay the price in order to realize it. They are full of dreams but lack motivations and efforts.

I am apparently no John Maxwell but I believe that we can usually succeed in reaching what we want if we put our minds to it.

Being young and wild

Entering young adulthood automatically gives us the free passes to try out what we want, away from the vulnerability of being too young and the greater responsibility of being too old.

When we grow older, our priorities change together with our age. Sometimes, even when we have the desire for things, we cannot simply get hold of the luxury of time and the privilege of health.

That is why we have to grab the opportunity that life gives us now. One opportunity is to travel!

Here are three reasons why:

1.     Traveling teaches us lessons we cannot learn otherwise

It teaches us adventure. There is a big difference between reading about Paris or Rome on travel books than to actually experiencing them.

We become braver in taking risks to taste the fullness of life. When we are able to climb up the Eiffel tower, swim the beaches of Bali, learn to speak Italian, experience the Auckland skywalks, or ride a gondola, we are able to get new perspectives of why there are things in the world that are made the way they are.

2.     Traveling teaches us life and compassion

It’s not merely about the adventure and the photos. Traveling meets you in the eye of a real world and edifices you to care for issues and matters that are bigger than you. Issues that are easily ignored by the lackadaisical minds of the young.

Africa is one of the good examples. Considerable number of people young and old die from hunger. That said, you get to appreciate the bigger picture of life. You start to accept that the world is not always about you. And you realize that you are way luckier about things as they are in your life.

The respect and care for the suffering and belief of the other half of the billions of human beings in the world begin to set in your heart.

3.     Traveling teaches us culture

When you travel you see new place, meet new people, and taste new food. You are able to observe local practices that are so distinct and worth the story. It brings you to a higher level of understanding a country, a nation.

The Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal in India, the Magellan’s Cross in the Philippines; they tell volumes about the history of the past and how things dramatically changed towards the present.

It surely is worth the investment!

It may get you a little out of your comfort zone but that is why it teaches you greater things, because it primarily scrapes you from fear.

You won’t always be young. Places change through time. So start to discover the world for all its worth. Travel!

And even if you’re no longer young you can travel, anyway. It is never too late.

Everyone can become a traveler and a storyteller.

Traveling gives us exactly that kind of opportunity--- to travel and write or tell other people about it; to inspire and be inspired all at the same time.

And one more thing though, traveling leaves a good mark in our memories. Someday when our age comes past the calendar, we have extraordinary things to share to the new generation.

Postscript: Listen to this travel song I've always loved. Thanks to David Isaacs, I am more inspired to trek the world---wanderlust!
